Splitflow

Split anything. Settle in seconds.

Picture a Goa trip: three friends, one villa, a dozen bills — and, on the flight home, a notes app full of “who paid for what?”. Splitflow is the app I designed and built so the trip stays the story, and the arithmetic quietly takes care of itself.

01The moment

The trip ends. The arithmetic begins.

Somewhere between the last beach shack and the airport cab, someone opens a notes app. Was the scooter split three ways or two? Who covered the villa deposit? Spending money together is easy — settling it is what quietly strains a friendship.

Friends at dinner with phones and a bill
The maths of splitting was solved long ago. The feeling around it wasn’t.
02Five promises

Before any screen, five promises

Money between friends runs on trust. These five promises were written first — and every trade-off after had to keep them.

  1. 01

    Not a paisa goes missing

Every split adds back to the bill exactly. When a rupee won’t divide evenly, the leftover is given an owner — out in the open.

  2. 02

    Everyone sees the same truth

Your phone never guesses a balance. Arun, Priya and you are always looking at the same ledger.

  3. 03

    Nothing changes behind your back

Every edit carries a name and a history. If someone changes the scooter bill, you can see who, when and what it was before.

  4. 04

However you add it, it’s checked the same

Typed in a hurry, scanned from a receipt or repeating every month — every expense walks the same path and passes the same checks.

  5. 05

    Calm, because it’s money

Money between friends is emotional. The interface stays quiet and honest — even about what hasn’t synced yet.

03The trip, through the app

From “let’s just use an app” to everyone square

Six moments from the same trip, each on a real screen from the release build. Keep scrolling — the trip plays out as you go.

01Before the trip

One promise, before anything else

Someone in the group chat says “let’s just use an app this time.” The first screen makes a single promise — split anything, settle in seconds — and is upfront: free, no hidden fees, split to the paisa.

04The bill at Café Mondegar

Five dishes, GST, a service charge — and nobody ate the same thing

Photograph the receipt and every line becomes something you can hand to the right people. Tax and service charge follow the food. When the last line finds its owner, the app says so, quietly.

Snap it — “Check the lines, then use them.”

05The case of the missing paisa

₹1,000 between three friends isn’t ₹333.33 each

A calculator says ₹333.33 each. Add it back up: ₹999.99. One paisa has quietly disappeared — and nobody owns it.

One paisa is nothing. A hundred of them across a summer of trips is a running “are you sure that’s right?”. So Splitflow counts in whole paise and gives every leftover a clear owner, out in the open.

06Settling up

Five IOUs walk into a group chat. Three payments walk out.

A trip leaves a tangle of small debts — Arun owes you, Priya owes Arun, Meera owes Priya… Splitflow works out where everyone actually stands and proposes the fewest payments that leave everyone square.

5 payments

₹5,000 changing hands · everyone ends at the same balance

Splitflow nets each person’s position and proposes the fewest payments that leave everyone square — per currency, never converting behind your back. Turn it off per group if people prefer to pay exactly who they owe.

07Looking back

“Wait, how much did we spend?” Now there’s an answer.

Where the money went, who carried the trip (“You covered 64% of spending”), your own spending across every group — and a one-tap report to send to the group chat.

08The small things

What keeps friends friends

Trips don’t go to plan. Each of these details exists because of a moment that could otherwise turn awkward.

Saved · will sync when you’re online

No signal at the beach shack

Add the bill anyway. It waits safely on your phone, and it will never quietly overwrite something a friend changed meanwhile.

Record money back

The scooter deposit came back

Refunds attach to the original expense and can never exceed it — so a returned deposit can’t accidentally make someone owe more.

Links expire after 7 days

A friend of a friend joined

Invite by link or QR — or add them as a guest who can join expenses now and claim their place later.

Nothing is deleted.

The trip is over

Archive it. It leaves your active list, but every line of the story stays exactly where it was.

≥ 4.5 : 1 contrast

Read in bright sunlight

Owed and owing colours are checked for contrast in light and dark mode — and never rely on colour alone.

A haptic for every commitment

Felt, not just seen

Selecting, saving and warnings each have their own gentle tap — and every animation respects reduce-motion.

Asking a friend for money, without the awkwardness

It’s the hardest message to send. Pick the tone that fits the friendship — the nudge carries the exact amount and how long it’s been open, so you don’t have to.

Just a gentle nudge — you owe me ₹1,750 for Flat 302. No rush 🙂

Days outstanding and an exact-amount UPI QR travel with every nudge. Sample copy.

Calm by design, tuned to the millisecond

Deep-blue cards for the numbers that matter, big rupees with quiet paise, and a small vocabulary of motion and haptics — small enough to stay consistent everywhere.

Most shared expenses aren’t financial moments.

They’re road trips, flatmates, dinners and weekends.

10How it came together

From an argument about a scooter to a release build

Strategy, design and building weren’t separate stages. AI-assisted development shortened the distance between an idea, an interaction and something you could hold — while every decision stayed a human one.

  1. 01

    Start with the argument

Not with features — with the moments friends actually disagree about: who paid, what was shared, who still owes.

  2. 02

    Write the promises

Paisa-exact maths, visible history, a calm interface. Every later decision had to keep them.

  3. 03

    Design one journey

Home, group, add, settle and activity as a single story — then a full visual redesign of every screen.

  4. 04

Build with AI as a partner

AI-assisted development shortened idea → interaction → testable app from months to days, with a human decision behind every change.

  5. 05

    Take it outside

Real Android hardware, weak signal, crumpled receipts, reminders — all the way to a signed release build.

Outside this page

Some of the best parts aren’t on this page

This is Splitflow from the outside — the way a friend on that Goa trip would meet it. The architecture, the data model, the AI workflow and what comes next stay private. Not because they’re unfinished, but because they’re better as a conversation.

“The best money moment between friends is the one nobody remembers.”
